Our project car had been kept in storage for a number of years. Though cosmetically it looked fairly rough, it was actually in relatively good condition for a car of this age. However, it was apparent that a number of new parts and some fairly extensive refurbishment would be required to bring this car "back to life."

Doing some research on the background of your particular project vehicle can be one of the most rewarding parts of an automotive restoration. Here are some suggested resources that you're certain to find helpful.

• General history books on the specific model you're refurbishing (figure A) will provide a sense of history, as well as practical information, about your car. Even books covering model years before and after the specific model you're working on can be very helpful. They'll help provide a sound overall understanding of the background and engineering of the car.

• The original (or reprinted) factory service manual for the make, model and year of your project vehicle (figure B) are "the bible" for any automotive restoration or serious repair work. This invaluable resource will cover everything on or in the car, from front bumper to back bumper. It will include proper servicing techniques, torque specifications and unique attributes that may need to be handled in a particular way on a given vehicle.

• Restoration-parts catalogs and publications like Hemmings Motor News (figure C) will help you find new, vintage or reproduction parts you may need to make the car like new.

• Many classic models like the Thunderbird have associations and clubs devoted specifically to them -- possibly even models from a particular year or era. These clubs often have newsletters, publications or websites that you may find relevant and useful. Organizations like this can also help you network with other owners and restorers who may be able to assist you at locating parts or help for your restoration.

• At the most basic level, general auto-repair guides (figure D) will walk you through some of the most basic maintenance and repair procedures that are common to most vehicles. If you are new to auto repair, these may be helpful to you.

• Finally, attending auto shows (figure E) is a good way to learn more about vintage vehicles, and find others who may have done a restoration project on the same model you're considering or restoring. For the T-bird, it's a great idea to join a Thunderbird club and attend car shows and swap meets. A trip to your local junkyard may also be enlightening. These are all places where you're likely to meet people who share your passion for classic cars, and may be able to help you with your project.

• Today, one of the most useful tools in auto restoration is the internet. There you may find fan websites devoted to the classic car of your choice. You can also participate in online discussion groups devoted to particular types of vehicles and online auctions where you may be able to locate project vehicles, parts-cars and hard-to-find parts. You can also take digital pictures of your vehicle, or parts you may be working on, to share them instantly with other enthusiasts online who may be able to help or advise you.
