If the weatherstripping around your car's windows or hatch is looking worn, it may be time to replace it. If the wear isn't too bad, however, there may be some things you can do to help restore the stripping. One of those is the addition of foam inserts inside the hollow rubber weatherstripping. Here are some tips:
- Examine and assess the extent of damage on the section of weatherstripping.
- Using a sharp blade such as a utility knife, cut a slice into the rubber at one end of the damaged section.
- Foam rods (available at auto parts stores) can then be inserted inside the weatherstripping. Spray silicon lubricant onto the foam rod, and slide the foam rod down through the opening that you've cut, pushing it through the length of the damaged section using a piece of coat-hanger wire.
- If a long stretch of the stripping or a corner has been damaged, you may need to do this in sections, concentrating on one short section at a time.
- If the damage wasn't already too far along, the use of the foam inserts should stretch the life of your weatherstripping. Eventually, the stripping may need to be replaced entirely.
