To protect your taillights from being damaged when driving off-road, consider installing rear stone guards. Like grill guards and brush guards, these are available in black or chrome finishes, or in a powder-black that's more resistant to rust. Installing these is fast and easy. They install by means of two mounting attachments (figure A) that fasten using the same small bolts that hold the taillight covers in place. They are stabilized on the opposite side by a small metal support-bracket.

    Materials:

    Rear stone-guards and mounting hardware
    Socket wrench
    Screwdriver
    Pry tool

    1. Locate the bolts that hold the taillight covers in place. In our demonstration, since our vehicle was a pickup, this required lowering the tailgate. Once you've located the bolts, remove them using a socket wrench.

    2. After removing the bolts, remove the taillight covers using a pry tool (figure B).

    3. Slide the guard down over the cover (figure C) until the holes in the mounting attachments line up with the holes used for attaching the cover.

    4. Place the guard and cover, together, back in position for mounting. Reinstall the bolts and tighten them down for the finished look (figure D). Make certain that the support bracket clasps on the side of the taillight housing.

    5. Check for proper alignment of the covers and guards and, if necessary, raise and lower the tailgate to ensure that there is proper clearance with the new installation. If the brackets interfere with opening and closing, they can be bent slightly for adjustment.
