A grill protector and wraparound front body-protectors give your Jeep a more rugged appearance and will function as damage control if you plan to do any serious off-roading. >CLICK on the image above to download a video showing installation

To upgrade your Jeep Wrangler for some aggressive off-roading, one of the more functional add-ons is a grill guard and front-end protector kit. This is a fairly easy installation since all the parts come as a kit and are made to fit the Jeep exactly.

The grill guard is installed to the front bumper by means of a bolt-on center support (figure A). The center support can also accommodate a winch if you should choose to add one. Once the support and grill guard are installed, the front body-protector and optional fender-protectors (figure B) simply bolt into place. The installation makes use of factory holes and predrilled holes in the accessory parts, so no drilling is necessary.

Your grill guard and front-end protectors will come with the necessary mounting hardware and detailed instructions for installation. Read and follow the instructions and diagrams carefully as there may be slight variations between installations depending on your year-model and specific Jeep vehicle. Following is a summary of the basic steps for installation as performed in our demonstration.

    Materials:

Grill guard and wraparound front body-protectors
Socket wrench with socket and torque attachments
    Electric cutting tool

    1. Before installing the center support, you'll need to remove the decorative plastic piece just behind the bumper. The piece is attached with four bolts -- two on either side. The plastic piece will need to be trimmed later so that it can be reinstalled once the new hardware is in place.

    2. Once the plastic piece is removed, install the center support bracket to the top of the bumper. The bracket is centered on top of the bumper (figure C), and it attaches with the factory bolts that secure the bumper to the factory bumper brackets. There are two bumper brackets beneath the bumper (a right and left bracket) and one centered behind the bumper. The new center-support bracket/winch plate has attachment points at each of the three bumper-brackets. Attach the bracket and snug the bolts (figure D), but don't tighten them completely just yet.

    3. With the center-bracket in place, position the grill guard on the bracket (figure E) and bolt it in place using the predrilled holes on either side. Again, snug the bolts, but don't tighten them all the way.

    4. The front body-protectors come in two main sections, a right and left side, and bolt into predrilled holes on the grill guard. Hold one of the protector pieces in position to determine proper placement (figure F) then bolt it in place loosely using the three bolts, nuts and washers provided in the kit. Do the same for the protector that mounts on the other side.

    5. Once the body-protectors are in place, the fender-protectors (figure G) insert into the tubular ends of the body-protectors. Align the holes in the fender-protector and body-protector, and secure the fender-protector in place using the bolts and lock-nuts provided.

    6. The rear, lower end of the fender-protector attaches with bolts to factory holes in the frame of the vehicle (figure H).

    7. Once all parts are in place, go back and make any minor adjustments to the assembly and tighten all the bolts down firmly.

    8. Reinstall the plastic trim piece behind the bumper.
