  • Honda Aerodynamics Upgrade: Part 2 of 4
    From "Tricked Out"
    episode DTRK-307

In this project Tricked Out host Andrew Totolos installs a remote-controlled rear spoiler and front-end canards to improve the racing aerodynamics on a Honda S2000. Now that the motorized spoiler has been mounted to the trunk of the car, it's time to run the wiring up to the dash to hook into the control unit.

Materials/tools used in this second phase of the project:

    panel removal tool
    grabber tool
    electrical tape
    shift knob

    Steps:

    • The wiring for the spoiler is going to travel up the side of the car on an existing wire highway. To access the conduit, you’ll have to pop off several panels in the trunk and on the driver's side.

    • To get the trunk panels out, three rings clips pop off first. Then use a panel removal tool to take of the clips holding the panel behind the driver’s seat, and pull both of them out of the trunk (figure A).

    • Moving forward in the car, remove the doorsill trim by popping it up and off, and then slide the seat forward.

    • A trim piece comes off by first removing the garment hook and then the screw underneath. Remove one more on the bottom.

    • The side panel is next. It's held in place by one screw and then it can be popped out too.

    • Using a grabber tool fully inserted into the wire path, tape the wires to it and carefully pull it back through (figure B).

    • Un-tape the wires, and then run them along the same path as the factory wires, down by the seat and under the doorsill trim.

    • When the wiring reaches up under the dash, put all the panels back into place in the reverse order that you took them off, making sure that the wires are tucked underneath and not showing.

    • You can also purchase a gearshift knob to control the wing. To install it, simply unscrew and remove the existing shift knob. The new remote control knob (figure C) simply screws down on top of its spacer and is secured with a set screw.

Later, after mounting the retractable canards in the front bumper, we’ll wire the wing along with the canards at the same time we wire the fuse panel.
