Since the 1999 production year, all vehicles have been required to include driver-side and passenger-side air bags. Along with seatbelts, air bags are designed to protect your head and chest from hitting the windshield, dash or steering wheel in the event of a frontal collision (figure A). Some vehicles take this a step further with door- or seat-mounted airbags that protect your torso from side impact. Some manufacturers have even developed a side-curtain airbag that drops from the ceiling to prevent injuries in a side-impact collision.

Another feature to look for is safety cage construction. Developed originally for racing, this construction protects driver and passengers by housing them in a "cage" of reinforced steel (figure B) that is hard to bend. Areas in front of and behind the safety cage are made from softer metals that are designed to absorb the energy of a collision.

ABS braking systems are included on many newer vehicles. The system monitors wheel speed and adjusts braking pressure to prevent skidding and help the driver maintain control in an emergency stop situation. Rear-wheel ABS, found on some light trucks, will help the vehicle stop quickly in a straight line. Four-wheel ABS is even more safe and effective. With all four wheels under control, this braking system allows you to steer as you stop for the ultimate in braking control.
