    New Speakers Installation

The 1968 Camaro has undergone an audio-component upgrade with a new stereo receiver/tape-deck and CD-changer. The audio system upgrade can be completed with some new audio speakers.

The old speakers (figure A) have worn out from age and use over the years, so they'll need to be replaced to allow the new stereo system to deliver the kind of sound for which it was designed.

In fact, when this car was new, the standard radio came with only one speaker mounted in the front dash. The stock single-speaker will be replaced with an after-market single-mount dual speaker (figure B) to allow for a certain amount of stereo imaging delivered from the front speaker location.

Another option for stereo speakers in the front of the vehicle would be to mount two separate speakers on either side of the driver compartment using replacement kick-plates designed to house individual speakers (figure C).

Following are the installation procedures as shown in the episode.

Important: The steps outlined below are highlights from the stereo installation for the chosen upgrade components as shown in the program. There may be variations in installation procedures depending on brands and models selected, and on various vehicles. Car stereo equipment generally comes with thorough installation instructions. Read and follow the instructions, diagrams and safety precautions that come with the products that you select.

Safety Alert: Whenever doing electrical work on a vehicle, disconnect the negative battery cable from the vehicle's battery to eliminate the possibility of electrical shock or damage.

    Materials:

    Replacement speakers and mounting hardware
    Speaker wire
    Replacement rear deck lid
    Socket wrenches
    Screwdrivers
    Nut driver
    Metal snips
    Awl

    Front Dual-Speaker

    • For mounting the dual front speaker, the first step is to remove the receiver and heater controls from the dash to access the old speaker from below. (NOTE: To save some steps, if you're installing a new receiver as part of the upgrade, the front speaker replacement should be done after the old receiver has been taken out of the dash, and before the new one is put in place.)

    • With the receiver and heater out of the way, the speaker wire can be disconnected (figure D).

    • Reach up behind the dash panel, and access the studs and nuts that hold the speaker in place and, using a nut driver, remove the retaining nuts.

    • With the nuts removed, the speaker can be lowered and removed from the dash through the opening left where the receiver and heater were mounted (figure E).

    • Attach the mounting bracket to the lower surface of the new dual speaker (figure F) and work it up into the speaker location inside the dash.

    • Secure the new speaker with nuts.

    • With the speaker in place, re-install the heater controls (figure G), wire the speaker to the receiver as indicated in the manufacturer's instructions, and re-install the receiver.

    Rear-Speaker Addition

    • To access the location where the rear speakers are to be installed, remove the rear deck-lid (figure H). Note that this Camaro previously had no rear speakers. (When this car was new, rear-speakers were a dealer option.) Therefore, holes will need to be cut to accommodate the new speakers.

    • Once you've measured for dimensions, mark out guides for the speaker openings. Use metal snips to cut out the opening (figure I). Use caution when dealing with cut metal, as the edges can be sharp.

      <
    • With the holes cut, install the pre-cut new deck lid beneath the rear window.

    • Using an awl, punch some holes through the soft deck-lid cover (figure J) to mark out a template for the locations where you'll be installing the new rear speakers.

    • Install the rear-speaker grills on top of the deck-lid (figure K) with the mounting screws provided.

    • With the screws extending below the bottom of the deck lid, install the rear speaker from underneath (figure L), and secure it with the mounting nuts using a nut driver.

    • Repeat the steps for the other speaker.

    • With both speakers installed, the next step is to connect the speaker cables leading to the receiver.

Important: When connecting the cables at the speaker (figure M) and at the receiver end, observe proper polarity. Mixing up the positive and negative sides of the cable can degrade the sound quality and may cause equipment damage.

    • The speaker cable can be concealed beneath the carpeting (figure N) just as the CD-changer cable was.

In the segment that follows, the body trim is restored, and new wheels and tires are added.
