Materials:

Two 3"x5"x4" self-adhesive lampshades with candle clip
Paper yarn (figure A -- there are 34 different colors):

  • 4-ply twisted-paper yarn in yellow, one skein
  • 1-ply twisted-paper yarn in yellow, two skeins
Tape measure
Scissors
Spray bottle with water
Ruler
Glue
Raffia ribbon

  1. Measure the top and bottom of each lampshade.

  2. Cut several 18" lengths from the 4-ply paper yarn. Separate into single strands, then cut single strands into 6" and 3" lengths.

  3. Moisten the centers of the strands with water, ravel and let dry. Once the strands are dry, place one strand on the top of the lampshade, starting with the seam. Then place another strand to the bottom of the lampshade (figure B).

  4. Moisten the centers of more strands by spraying with water or soaking in a container of water. Let stand to disperse moisture, then open the strands out from the center of each, leaving the ends intact to form leaflike shapes (figure C).

  5. Remove the protective wrapping from the shade. Cut approximately 10 to 12 6" leaves in half. Attach the leaves to the shade so that the pointed end of each leaf extends approximately 1" below the edge of the shade.

  6. Continue to overlap the leaves in several layers to cover the shade within 1" of the top. For the top row, use the 3" leaves with both ends intact. Glue so that the upper edges extend beyond the top of the shade.

  7. To finish the lampshade, take a long strand of raffia ribbon and tie around the top of the shade with a bow (figure D).
