Susan Khalje's guest, Kayla Kennington of Threads Magazine, demonstrates her technique for making seams an integral part of the design in a modular top and vest combo.

Materials:
Fashion fabrics (see amounts below for each garment)
Serger
Three spools of thread for serging
One spool of thread for connections (rayon decorative thread or metallic thread can be used to highlight the connecting stitches)
Polyester thread for tube seams
Rayon or other decorative thread for bar-tack seam connections
Modular Design for Couture Artwear (Kayla Ink., Pattern #918)

Steps for Panel Top:

  1. Cut rectangular pieces A, B, C, D and E for panel top according to your measurements as indicated on back of pattern envelope.

  2. Roll-hem serge long edges of panels A, B, C and D (figure A).

  3. Roll-hem serge one "width-side" of the large rectangle (back panel top edge).

  4. Roll-hem serge the two short edges and one long edge of the two sleeve panels E.

  5. Place panel A against panel B along serged edges and connect with multistitch zigzag stitch (figure B).

  6. Repeat step 6 for front panels B to C and C to D.
