The straw in this creation was taken from a deconstructed hat.

Throughout history, milliners not only made and sold women's hats but also sold imported linens and women's clothing. Milliner Katherine Carey, however, sticks to headgear. Carey, who is self-taught, believes that learning on one's own preserves the uniqueness of the milliner's creations, rather than subjecting them to an instructor's point of view. Hatmaking allows her creativity to flow -- she often deconstructs purchased hats and recycles the materials into new chapeaux. Although learning the sewing techniques can be frustrating for beginners, Carey says the inexpensive hobby is not only rewarding but also produces one-of-a-kind accessories.
