Craft expert Shauna Roberts explains how to turn a simple T-shirt into a piece of wearable art with flowers made from ribbon.

    Materials:

    T-shirts
Cardboard (to be placed inside T-shirts)
7/8" purple polka-dot grosgrain ribbon (3/4 yard for each flower)
3/8" purple polka-dot grosgrain ribbon (6" for the center of each flower)
    Wire
3/8" yellow grosgrain ribbon (5" or 6" long)
    1 1/2" pink grosgrain ribbon (7" long)
    1 1/2" pink grosgrain ribbon (6" long)
    Washable fabric glue
    Toothpicks
    3/8" green grosgrain ribbon

    1. To make a ribbon flower, use 3/4 yard of 7/8"-wide polka-dot grosgrain ribbon. Loop the ribbon to the right and left, making two loops on each side. Wrap a piece of wire around the center to secure the loops (figure A).

    2. Tie a knot in the center of a 6" piece of 3/8" polka-dot grosgrain ribbon. Wrap the ribbon around the center of the ribbon flower to cover the wire. Be sure to position the knot on top of the bow at the center.

    3. To make a ribbon flowerpot, cut two 7" pieces of 1 1/2"-wide pink grosgrain ribbon. Fold each in half so both measure 3 1/2" in length. Offset the open ends of each piece, matching the two outer top corners, forming a V with each piece. Glue the two V shapes together to form the bottom of the flowerpot (figure B). Cut a 6" piece of 1 1/2"-wide pink grosgrain ribbon, and glue it with fabric glue horizontally, along the top edges of the V-shaped pieces, to create the top rim of the flowerpot (figure C). Embellish with a strip of yellow polka-dot 3/8" grosgrain ribbon glued just under the "rim" of the flowerpot. Glue a two-loop bow of 3/8" purple grosgrain ribbon to the flowerpot.

    4. Place a piece of cardboard inside the T-shirt, with the front of the T-shirt facing up. Using fabric glue, attach the flowerpot to the T-shirt, slightly below the center and to one side, or position it as desired. Create stems for the flowers out of 3/8" green grosgrain ribbon by gluing the end of the ribbon at the top of the flowerpot. Use a toothpick to apply fabric glue to the end of the ribbon. Make a "hump" in the ribbon by raising it from the T-shirt fabric and gluing it about 1" from the end. Create several humps in the stem along the length of the ribbon for a dimensional effect, gluing as you go (figure D).

    5. Make a single loop with a 5" piece of 3/8" green grosgrain ribbon. Glue the ends together to form a leaf. Create two leaves, and glue them to the stem about 2" from the top (figure E). Glue one ribbon flower at the top of the stem (figure F). Create three stems and flowers coming from the top of the flowerpot.

    Variation

    Materials:

White circular lace doily about 6" in diameter
    3/8"-wide green grosgrain ribbon
Various colors of grosgrain ribbon, 7/8" to 1 1/2" wide
    Thread and needle
    Washable fabric glue
    T-shirt
Cardboard to be placed inside T-shirt

    1. Shauna used ribbon yo-yos to create flowers. Use 11" of 1 1/2" grosgrain ribbon, fold it in half with short ends together, and stitch along the short ends (figure G).

    2. Hand-stitch a running stitch along one edge of the circle, and pull to gather. Pull the gathering thread to create a circle (figure H). Glue a button in the center to create a flower.

    3. Fold the lace doily in half, and glue to the T-shirt.

    4. Create stems for the flowers, using 3/8" green grosgrain ribbon and gluing them to the T-shirt as described above, making "humps" in the stem.

    5. Glue yo-yo flowers to the tops of the stems. Add branches to the main stems, using 3/8" green grosgrain ribbon and gluing flowers to the tops of the branched stems (figure I).

    Variation

    Materials:

    T-shirt
Cardboard to be placed inside T-shirt
    Grosgrain ribbon
    Hot glue
    Washable fabric glue
    Covered buttons
    Wooden dowel 1/2" in diameter
    Spray starch
    Clothespins
    Oven

    1. Create loopy daisies by placing the short ends of 5" pieces of 3/8" grosgrain ribbon together and hot-gluing the ends. Use at least six loops per daisy, and hot-glue the ends to a covered button (figure J).

    2. Make a swirled twill stem by wrapping a wooden dowel with 3/8" green grosgrain ribbon. Secure the ends with clothespins. Apply spray starch, and bake the wrapped dowel in a 225-degree oven for 20 minutes (figure K).

    3. Glue three swirled stems to a T-shirt. Glue a loopy daisy to the top of each stem. Glue a bow at the bottom of the three stems.
