Mary Lyon, host of DIY Crafts, dyes elegant silk shoes with coffee.

    Materials:

Silk peau de soie or satin shoes
    Strong coffee
    Bowl
    Sponge
Beads, lace, pearls, flowers, charms or other embellishments
    Fabric glue
    Needle and thread
    Hair clips

    1. Put strong black brewed coffee in a bowl. Dip a sponge in the coffee, squeeze it out, and wipe the sponge over one shoe. Apply several light coats, reloading the sponge as necessary. Repeat with the second shoe, making sure that the colors match. Color the shoes a little darker than the desired shade because the color will be lighter when the shoes dry (figure A).

    2. Let the shoes dry, then embellish them with beads, pearls, flowers, charms, etc., around the toe and heel (figure B). Use hair clips to hold embellishments in place temporarily. Try on the shoes and bend your foot to see whether the embellishments are comfortable before gluing them on. Use fabric glue to attach the embellishments. If desired, for added security, take a couple of stitches through the embellishments and into the shoes (figure C).
