Here's a project the kids will love to make--for themselves or as a keepsake for Grandma. Mary Lyon, host of DIY Crafts, shows how to make a polymer clay ornament in the shape of a child's hand, decorated with a favorite photo. Materials: Polymer clay in two contrasting colors Pasta machine or rolling pin (Note: After being used to condition clay, the equipment can no longer be used for food preparation.) Photographs or color photocopies of photos Paper Scissors Pencil Toothpicks Alphabet pasta Ribbon or cording - Condition the clay by working it in your fingers or by running it through a pasta machine. Roll the clay into a 1/8"-thick sheet, using a rolling pin or pasta machine.
- Trace around a child's hand on a piece of paper, and cut out the template.
- Place the template on the clay, and cut out the shape of the hand by running a toothpick through the clay around the template (figure A).
- Cut out the photo in a circle to fit in the center of the hand. Press it into the clay in the center of the hand (figure B).
- Make a small rope with a contrasting color of polymer clay. Place it around the edge of the photograph to create a border. Push the side of a toothpick into the border clay, making decorative indentations (figure C).
- Have kids find the letters that spell their name in alphabet pasta. Place them on the clay, down one finger or around the photo. Allow them to add any other words they want.
- Poke a hole in the top of one finger of the clay to make a hanger for the ornament.
- Bake in a 265-degree oven for 20 minutes. When the clay is cool, glue toothpicks to the back of each finger to reinforce the clay (figure D).
- Loop a piece of ribbon or cording through the hole in the finger to create a hanger.
