  • Serged Double-Faced Wool Coat
  • Serged Double-Faced Wool Coat
    From "Sew Much More"
    episode SMM-319F

    Materials:
    Pattern:
Linda Lee Originals pattern: Serger Coat Pattern or Child’s Serger Coat Pattern
Wool melton or polar fleece fabric (yardage is determined per pattern for your size)
    Decorative stitching for outer edges:
Decorative threads such as Monet wool-acrylic or Burmilana, or Success Serging Yarn. (additional thread suggestions are mentioned in the pattern)
    Matching needle thread
    Threads needed for inside seams:
2 texturized nylon threads (Woolly Nylon, poly yarn) for the upper and lower loopers
2 serger threads for the needles
    Serger capable of chain-stitch
    Tweezers, scissors, wire-threaders, etc.

    Steps:

    1. Lay out pattern pieces in a nap direction. Cut one body, two sleeves and two pockets per pattern instructions.

    2. Place a label on the right side of lapel as a reminder.

    3. Draw lines with a chalk marker to act as guidelines or stitch randomly. Lines will be drawn on the wrong side of the lapel because the chain-stitch places the decorative chain on the fabric that is placed against the feed dogs.

    4. Thread serger with a chain-stitch. Place Monet in the chain looper and serger thread in the chain-stitch needle. Place a scrap of fabric under the presser foot extending the fabric behind the foot.

    5. Stitch three stitches and then clip the threads close to the foot.

    6. Stitch onto the fabric scrap to make sure you are getting a chain-stitch. Adjust tensions as needed to create the effect you want. A stitch length of 3.5 to 4.0 is a good length for this thread.
