Trapunto Wrist Bag Learn how to make a wrist strap zipper bag with a leather layering technique. From "Stylelicious" episode DSTY-109

Host Jenifer Arntson will raise the roof with a wrist strap zipper bag using the traditional leatherwork layering technique of Trapunto--creating a three dimension design with raised images.

Materials:

1/3 yd. of outside material
1/3 yd. of lining and inlay material
12" x 4" material for strap
upholstery zipper and zipper pull
foam
craft knife
spray adhesive
pencil
pattern (below, right)

Trapunto Wrist Bag

This project takes approximately three hours for the beginning crafter.

FYI: Trapunto is a quilting technique that you see in traditional leatherwork.

1. Cut out one piece of 11" x 17" (A) outside material.

2. Cut out one piece of 11" x 17" (C) outside material.

3. Cut a piece of inlay material (D) about 1" bigger than design for foam. This is the inlay for the padded Trapunto design.

   Note: You could use a thinner material than vinyl for D or C if the pieces were too bulky to sew. Another option is trim away excess Trapunto backing, and use a lighter lining material.

4. Trace the pattern onto piece A and C, on the wrong side.

5. Cut out the pattern on piece A.

6. Trace the pattern onto the foam with a pencil. Using scissors cut out the foam pattern pieces.

7. Glue the foam cutout design onto piece C, the lining pieces, where you traced the pattern, and let it dry (figure A).

8. Spray the foam Trapunto pattern with glue. Lay piece D over the foam and smooth with a pencil eraser (figure B).

   Note: This removes the bubbles that form and defines the dimensional form.

9. Spray adhesive on the back of A and place it on top of the inlay backing D so that the raised pattern is shown through the cut pieces in A.

10. Top stitch around the shape with a straight stitch, this creates the Trapunto effect on the front panel. Also stitch a stem for the pattern (figure C).

11. Pin the right side of the zipper along the top right side edge of the front panel with tape up and the end of the zipper tape extending 1" on both sides.

12. Sew on the zipper with a straight stitch 1/4" in from the edge. Then fold back the zipper and topstitch tape down, being sure to catch outside layer A and lining--layer C.

13. Fold A in half lengthwise and place zipper head onto the ends so it now zips up.

14. Sew an "X" on the end of the open zipper tape to create a zipper stop 1-1/2" (figure D).

15. Cut a strap piece of body vinyl 12" x 4" then gluing or sewing strap folding edges into the center and then fold in half to create the finished strap. Finished measurement is 12" x 1".

    Note: You can also buy pre-made vinyl straps, or use webbing.

16. Fold straps in half to make the handle and right sides together staple the handle on the open top left corner of the bag.

17. Open zipper of bag.

18. Flip the inside out and staple along the open edges of the side and bottom of bag body.

19. Sew a 1/4" seam allowance along the stapled edges, and double stitch over the handle area.

20. Pull the staples out and cut the corners 1/16" then turn right side out.
