    PHOTO

Macrame with an updated texture: a lacy appearance combined with the toughness of leather.
Guest Irina Serbina knots leather macramé-style to create a bracelet that looks intricate, but is really easy to create. The trick is mastering a square knot technique.

    Materials:

    (3) 2-yard lengths of 1mm leather cord
    Sterling silver clasp
    2 tube silver beads
Optional: 10 head pins, 10 beads
    Macramé knotting board
    Scissors
    T-pins
Super Glue Gel or E6000 glue

    1. Attach two 2-yard cords to one side of the clasp, fold in half. You have 4 working strands. Pull them all through the tube bead. Pin your work down to the Macramé working board.

    2. To create the first row (figure A), make square knot on left 3 strands (cords 1, 2, 3).

    3. To create second row, create square knot on right 3 strands (cords 2, 3, 4). Two of the strands will come of of the first knot in the previous row, last strand will be just added to the pattern.

    4. Repeat rows (figure B) until bracelet is the desired length (figure C). Remember: the clasp will add approximately 1" to the total length.

    5. Pull all cords through the tube bead, through the other side of a clasp, then back into tube bead. If all strands will not fit back through tube bead, make sure all those that hold the clasp do. Cut other short and hide inside the loop.

    6. Adjust all the cords, close the clasp, straighten up the pattern, add some glue into the tube beads. Let it set, cut excess cord (figure D).

    7. If you want to decorate your bracelet, make 8-10 dangles using head pins and beads. To do this, put the bead on the head pin, cut the pin leaving a 3/8 in tail above the bead. Bend it against the bead at a right angle with your finger. Grip the very tip of the pin with round nose pliers, and wrap the wire around the pliers to close the loop. Make this loop far enough from the tip, to make loop at least 2 mm wide. Open the loop with flat nose pliers, attach to the bracelet.
