Vesta Abel, founder of Comotion Rubber Stamps, shows an easy-to-make western-style mirror featuring a rubber-stamped design that looks like leather. The leather look is created with a foam product that has been heated, stamped and painted.

Materials (first six items listed are available from Comotion):

    Concho Stamp® (model #1856)
Decor It Permanent Black Ink Kit® (model #3416)
Three sheets of Dark Brown Almost Leather® (model #7151)
Solvent Base Stamp Cleaner® (model #3325)
    Heat Tool® (model #9065)
    Pen Score Block® (model #7154)
    Deep-turquoise paint
    8" circular mirror
    Tracing paper and pen
    Fine-point permanent pen
    Sawtooth picture hanger
    Low-temp glue gun and glue
    Black spray paint
    Spray adhesive
    12" circle of particleboard
    Soft cloth

    1. Lay tracing paper over the pattern, trace the design, and cut out. Trace the pattern onto Almost Leather, and cut out a template. Using the template, trace and cut out 13 identical fan pieces from Almost Leather.

    2. Have a permanent-ink pad inked and ready for stamping. Heat the first fan on each side several times to shrink the material evenly. While the Almost Leather is still soft, quickly press the concho design into the center of the fan piece (figure A).

    3. If the design misses in some areas, fill in with a fine-point permanent pen. Repeat for the remaining 12 fans. Apply black paint to the edges of each fan. Squeeze turquoise paint in a diamond shape onto the center of each concho. Squeeze four tiny dots on the upper end of each design. Let dry.

    4. Spray the particleboard with black paint on the front, back and edges to seal. Apply spray adhesive to the back of the mirror. Position the mirror over the center of the particleboard, and press down firmly. Space the fans evenly around the mirror, making sure that the board is covered (figure B). When the pattern is set, glue each piece to the board with low-temp hot glue. Attach a picture hanger to the back of the particleboard. Clean the stamp with solvent cleaner
