  • Learn how to convert a picture frame into a shadowbox scrapbook.
    From "Scrap"
    episode DSCD-101

Host Scott Petti shows his nephew, Mason, how to take an inexpensive picture frame and turn it into a shadowbox scrapbook to house everything from his grandfather's old war medals to cuff links, awards and any meaningful family memorabilia. It is a great way to display your valuable items and have them tucked away in a safe place—best of all, it's incognito, and can hide away in most book shelves.

    1. Start with a picture frame—take out the backing and leave the glass (figure A).

    2. Cut foam core strips to line and hold the glass.

    3. Wrap with velvet and glue the inside edges of the frame, holding the glass firm against the frame.

    4. Cut two pieces of foam core to fit in the frame.

    5. Trace around items on one piece, and then cut out the foam to the traced lines.

    6. Glue both pieces together.

    7. Glue the fabric to the top piece with the cut-outs.

    8. Push fabric into the cut-out slots (figure B).

    9. Put items in the slots.

    10. Place backing into frame and glue.

    11. Apply gel medium to the visible sides; top, right and bottom. Drag a brush through the gel medium to give (pages) look. When dry, paint it an off white paper color.

    12. Cut three pieces of danny board to the size of the frame—allow for cover overhang.

    13. On the inside of the cover, glue binging fabric to hold all three and the hinge.

    14. Use the same binding paper and cut to 8.5" x 14". Use a computer to print your title.

    15. Seal with spray fixative and glue to the outside of the cover.

    16. Glue your cover paper to the outside and leave extra to wrap around.

    17. Flip cover over and glue paper down to the inside.

    18. Cut paper for the inside cover leaving an edge of cover paper showing.

    19. Glue the paper and then glue the shadow box to the back cover and edge (figure C).
