Q: What would be a fun way to show off my son's artwork and pictures for his grandparents?

A: (DIY crafts expert Debbie Stapley) I've got a really cute and fun idea for you. A few little 2" x 2" pieces of wood are going to be the building blocks for this craft project featuring your child's handiwork. Let me show you how to do it:

    Tracing Image

    Steps:

    1. First, get a board of pine that is 2" thick and cut it down into 2" x 2" blocks. A home store or cabinet shop can make the cuts. Our picture will have three blocks across and three blocks down.

    2. Rub down the blocks with sandpaper to remove any rough edges. Use a tack cloth to remove the dust from sanding.

    3. Prime each side with a coat of white latex paint. Let dry.

    4. Arrange the blocks, three blocks across by three blocks down and tape together with masking or painter's tape.

    5. Place carbon or transfer paper between drawing and blocks.

    6. Trace over drawing with tip of pen cap (? Or some blunt-tipped utensil) to put outline on blocks.

Tip: Design of picture shouldn't be too small or detailed -- larger shapes work best.

    7. Use acrylic craft paints to paint in the design. Leave the paint to dry and remove the tape. Cover with a one or two coats of clear acrylic varnish on that side.

    Decoupage

    Steps:

    1. Turn blocks over to blank side and tape together. (You will be gluing or decoupaging a photo onto the blocks The image could be a picture of your child enlarged or reduced on a color copier to fit the 6" x 6" format of the blocks.)

    2. Turn picture over and draw out a 2" grid, three squares across and three down.

    3. Cut out squares and decoupage each square of image onto block to form picture when blocks are put in correct order. Be sure to decorate all six sides of blocks. Blocks become your own puzzle.

I think these picture blocks will be a real "blockbuster" with your kids and their grandparents. Just remember to sand off any of the rough edges and give the blocks a good two to three coats of polyurethane when you're done so the paint and the paper don't come off.
