Materials: Sheet of pre-primed canvas (24" x 32") Sheet of craft paper Light or sky blue acrylic paint Apple Barrel Colors Craft Paint Goose Feather acrylic paint #20777 Beige acrylic paint Indoor/outdoor glass paint in two shades of green Plaid Decorator Glaze -- New Gold Leaf #53002 Metal ruler/yardstick Carpet tape (1.4") Graphite paper Topcoat satin spray Scissors Pencil Artist brush Right triangle ruler Water-based satin polyurethane Plate (for paint) 3" foam brush Miscellaneous foam leaf stamps Sharpie pen -- black Clean release painter's tape Ballpoint pen or pencil - Measure and draw a 1" border around backside edge of canvas (figure A ). On the show, a 19 x 22 rectangle shaped piece of canvas was used. You can do any shape or size you prefer.
- Lay ruler along drawn border and lightly score a line with scissor blade (be careful not to score all the way through the material). Scoring will make it easier to bend the edges over.
- Miter corners at a 45-degree angle. Take a triangle and match it up to your score line (figure B). Mark the corner and do the same on the opposite side. This will help to get rid of a lot of the bulk from the corners when you miter it this way. Take scissors and cut off the corner.
- Apply two-sided carpet tape outside of the drawn border. The tape comes in different widths, so trim it to fit your border. Press it down nice and smooth making sure there are no wrinkles.
Note: If you try and use glue on this and get it wet, canvas will sometimes shrink up and can be a real nightmare at a later step. The tape makes it much easier to work with. - Fold lip over and press down. You can use your triangle to really crease the line (figure C). Do this on all 4 edges.
- Weight down the edges and allow the floorcloth to sit overnight.
- Apply base coat of sky blue (or color of your choice) to the front side of floorcloth (figure D) and allow it to dry.
- Plot and draw your family tree design on craft paper incorporating family crest/shield at the base of the tree. If you do not feel like you are a great artist, you can use a coloring book and just enlarge the pattern. The base part of the tree is where the parents or grandparents will go and each branch (figure E) will be where the son or daughter of the parents or grandparents will go, and the ends of the branches will be where their children will go. If you have a larger family, you will need to make a bigger floorcloth than we show here.
- Cover canvas with graphite paper (graphite side down), making sure the graphite is centered.
- Position and secure craft paper and graphite with clean release tape to the front of the canvas.
- Using a ballpoint pen or pencil, trace over the lines of your tree design (figure F). Before removing craft and graphite paper, make sure all lines transferred.
- Place a small amount of Goose Feather paint and a small amount of beige paint on a plate. Mix portion of each to make medium tone.
- Using artist's brush, apply paint to tree design blending paint with darkest paint color on edges of tree limbs.
- Highlight using lightest paint color and add lines representing tree's bark and knots (figure G).
- Pour small amount of both green shades of paint on plate. Using artist brush, paint half of leaf stamps in one shade of green and the other half in the other shade. Apply stamp to canvas at desired location, pressing firmly, then remove (figure H). Repeat to desired fullness of foliage.
- Paint the shield using gold glaze.
- Using Sharpie, write in family names (figure I).
- Lightly spray entire canvas with topcoat satin spray to seal ink and allow it to dry.
- Using large foam brush, apply multiple coats of water-based polyurethane to desired stiffness. (Suggestion of 2 to 3 coats).
- Allow to dry and enjoy.
