  • Toilet Seat Art
  • Hang a toilet seat on your wall—really!
    From "B. Original"
    episode DBOR-301

    PHOTO

Your decor may just need more...toilet seats.
If you held a contest for "least artistic household item," the humble toilet seat might well win. But Michele Beschen sees the potential in the least inspiring objects, and toilet seats are no exception. In this easy B. Original how-to, she shows how to transform a toilet seat into a sassy message board, frame or mirror.

Michele Beschen recommends buying a new, hard-surface toilet seat for this project. They’re inexpensive and available at discount stores as well as home improvement stores. Scroll down to see how you can turn a bargain seat into a piece worth hanging on the wall.

    Materials:

    hard-surface toilet seat
    electric sander or 100-grit sandpaper
    deglosser or liquid sander
    old rag
paints suitable for plastic or plastic primer and conventional paints
    paint brushes
    glue gun and glue
large photo, artwork, cork board or mirror
decoupage papers and decoupage medium (optional)
glass cutter and mirror mastic (if using mirror)
    hardware for hanging

    • Use the sander or sandpaper to rough up the glossy surface of the seat (figure A). You don't need to sand the underside of the seat, just the top and sides of the seat and both sides of the lid.

    • Wipe down all surfaces with an old rag dipped in deglosser or liquid sander to prepare the surface.

    • Paint and/or decoupage the seat however you choose (figure B). Paint directly on the seat if using paints made for use on plastics; otherwise, apply a coat of primer suitable for plastics and let it dry before adding the design.

    • There are plenty of options for the hole in the seat. The most obvious: Use it as a frame for a large photo or piece of art (figure C). You also can:

      Photo

      Hot-glue a piece of cork
      board to the back of
      the seat...

      Photo

      To create a one-of-a-kind
      message board.

      Photo

      Attach a mirror tile
      to the back of the
      seat with mirror mastic...

      Photo

      Paint a catchy phrase
      on the lid...

      Photo

      And see who really
      is the fairest of them
      all.

Flex your creativity and look for other ways you can B. Original with a toilet seat!
