    Materials:

    Low voltage lighting kit
    Eye hooks and hanging brackets
    Birdhouse and bird feeder
Plants with decorative pots and planters
    Drill and bits

Note: Begin by considering what type of lighting you want for your deck or patio areas. Low voltage lights are a good option, and they are basically inexpensive and easy to install.

    1. When you've made a lighting selection, be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation.

    2. After installing the light, be sure to cover the wires with gravel, stones (figure A) or any decorative choice you desire.

    3. Plug the transformer into a switch-controlled outlet, or set the timer so the lights come on automatically at a certain time each evening.

    4. Install decorative brackets for hanging baskets on the deck railings (figure B) and the exterior walls of your house. Simply drill pilot holes into the surface and secure the brackets with screws.

    5. Try hanging birdhouses and feeders around your deck area from either eye hooks installed in your eaves (figure C) or from decorative poles secured to the deck with brackets and screws.

    6. Support brackets also can be installed on the railings to support larger troth-type planters (figure D).

These are just some of the decorating possibilities for your deck. Have fun creating a special spot for those warm summer days!
