    Materials:

    Pressure washer
    Detergent
    Bucket
    Plastic drop cloths
    Wood sealer

If your deck looks a little dingy, cleaning it may do the trick -- but to really revive your deck to its original shape, you may also need to seal it.

Tip: Sprinkle a few drops of water on the deck surface to see if it's absorbed by the wood. If it is, it needs sealing -- and if it beads up, the sealing can wait.

    1. Wet any plants that may come in contact with a detergent during the cleaning process and cover them with plastic.

    2. Wet the deck surface (figure A) and pour the detergent into a bucket and insert the siphon hose from the pressure washer. Select the proper tip (figure B) for applying detergent.

    3. Thoroughly soak the surface of the deck and wait a few minutes for the detergent to loosen any dirt and mildew.

    4. Remove the siphon hose (figure C) from the bucket and select a tip that will provide a more concentrated stream to rinse the detergent and dirt away from the deck surface. Use a sweeping motion to rinse the deck lengthwise with the boards. You may change to a more concentrated tip for stubborn stains, but be careful not to get to close that you gouge the wood.

    5. Once the deck is completely clean, allow it to dry overnight if you're going to apply a stain or sealer.

By properly cleaning and sealing your deck, you'll restore it to its original beauty and help preserve it for years to come.
