Ceramic tile isn't just for walls: you can use it to decorate household items too. For instance, it's easy to decorate a wooden tissue-box cover (figure A) with mosaic tile. Start with several small pieces of broken tile (figure B). If you have to break the tile, cover it with a towel, and wear safety glasses. Spread mastic onto the box with a notched trowel (figure C). For small projects, consider using a disposable plastic trowel to spread mastic. Begin applying pieces of tile, starting in an upper corner (figure D). Vary the pattern for interesting visual effects, and try not to leave large gaps. Otherwise, you'll have to use a lot of grout. For the top of the box, place a smooth-edged piece of tile over the tile on the side of the box so it covers any rough edges (figure E). For the hole in the top of the box, use pieces that contour the hole (figure F). Spread grout into the gaps with a rubber grout float. Wipe off the excess with a damp sponge, then buff the tiles after the grout dries to a haze.
