If your hardwood floor has suffered damage that's too deep to fill or repair ( figure A), you'll need to remove and replace the affected boards. Mark two lines along the damaged board, about 3/4" away from either edge (figure B).
Then mark a cross-section diagonally across the width of the board (figure C), and cut along the lines with a circular saw. Set the depth of the blade so that it will barely cut all the way through the hardwood floor (figure D). When you cut across the board, hold the saw at an angle that prevents your cutting into the adjacent floorboards.
After you finish your cuts, remove the cut boards with a chisel (figure E). Make the opening as square as possible (figure F).
Cut a replacement piece to size, and remove the lower section of the groove so that the board will fit into the opening. Slide the piece into the opening (figure G), and use a tapping block to set it in place (figure H). Secure the piece with screws or finish nails.
