Instead of planting bulbs in the yard this year, why not plant them in containers that can be enjoyed indoors or out? With a few simple steps, Ask DIY Gardening expert Jessie Mack Burns demonstrates this quick and easy project. - First, find a pot of the desired size for planting your bulbs. Although most sizes will work, a 10 - to 12" pot will ensure your bulbs have enough room in between and will also allow you to include more bulbs.
- Next, place a drainage layer in the bottom of the pot (gravel or other suitable material), about 1" thick.
- Then add a 2 - to 3" layer of potting mix and arrange the bulbs on top, with the pointed ends facing upward.
- Cover the bulbs completely with more potting mix and add time-release fertilizer according to package directions.
- Water the bulbs and move the container to a cool area like a shed or the refrigerator (the latter option will generally only work for smaller containers).
- In a few months, you'll begin to see signs of growth. At this point, bring the container indoors and water regularly. Soon you'll be rewarded with a beautiful bevy of blooms!
