    Walter and the Kuehne family
Meet Ed and Paula Kuehne and their son, Joe. They share their home with a horse and several dogs and cats.

The Kuehnes love to look out their kitchen window at their land, but the landscaping they planted has grown out of control and looks out of proportion to them. Ed would like to plant something that looks beautiful but will be low maintenance. Paula hopes she can incorporate her favorite tree, a Norway spruce, into the new plan. They have limited knowledge about plants and have asked Walter and the DIY Garden Sense team for some guidance. They’d like a new landscape that looks beautiful year round.

    Required Project Timeline

The Kuehne’s waterfall project took eight hours to complete.

    Project Details

Walter’s plan will create a natural look that will not block the view of the yard or the horses.
The Kuehne’s made some good plant choices but just put them in the wrong place. So for our first step, we dug up a lot of those existing plants to de-clutter the view and put them in more sensible locations.

The biggest move was Paula’s favorite Norway spruce from the front of the house to the back where she can see it from the kitchen. Next, we added a new selection, a fringe tree with great looking foliage that will add to the view.

The Kuehnes have a waterfall where grasses will play a prominent role. Specifically, we’re using blue oat grass, Elijah blue fescue and fountain grass.

Finally, we’ll add a number of shrubs to the hillside, but nothing that will grow too tall.
