Maureen Gilmer visits her guest, gardener Deb Winters, who shows the Lady Banks rose that she planted to fill in atop a wall (figure A). Winters explains that starting to cut the tips will encourage lateral and horizontal growth (which will come in handy when it's time to mow under the rose!). The homeowner also has an extensive garden of potted minis (figure B), which she created to help screen a bare olive tree growing near hr swimming pool. Since the roses are in fairly small pots, she waters and fertilizes them often, and she prunes them regularly to keep the blossoms coming all season long. Gilmer fills in Winters's new plantings with several pots of golden minis, which will act as a ground cover (figure C). Then she adds verticality and a visual barrier with white tree minis (figure D).
