With a bug-off wagon garden, kids can make any corner of their yard look more colorful and discourage harmful bugs too. Just fill a wagon with fragrant plants that pesky bugs can't stand, such as lavender, rosemary, basil, sage, marigolds and Dahlberg daisies. Or try miniature sunflowers: birds will eat the seeds and stick around to eat harmful bugs. Hobby gardener Donna Hayes explains how to plant a bug-off wagon garden.

    Materials:

    Wagon
    Packing peanuts (not biodegradable)
    Potting soil
    Gloves
    Garden trowel
    Plants

    1. With a parent's permission, cover the wagon bottom with a single layer of packing peanuts (figure A).

    2. Scoop potting soil into the wagon until it's half full (figure B).

    3. Smooth out the soil.

    4. Add plants at various heights and of various colors (figure C).

    5. Add more soil around the plants to cover roots.

    6. Water your garden (figure D).

    7. Your bug-off wagon garden is ready to go.
