Hang these gardens in the kitchen or on a tree -- the scent lasts a long time.

A good rainy day project for kids who are at least age four is a scented garland, says show host Kim Haworth. Your child can give away the finished product, or save it to scent the kitchen or drape on a tree, indoors or out. Here are the basic steps: - Collect spicy scented items to string from the garden or kitchen, including pine cones, dried bay leaves, dried apple rings, cinnamon sticks, and orange peel.
- Thread a needle with dental floss, three or four feet or as long as you'd like.
- String the objects in any pattern you prefer, giving very young kids help as needed and watching out that the needle doesn't poke inexperienced fingers.
- To get the needle through the cinnamon sticks, lay them on the table top and stab the needle into them before stringing.
- Dress up the ends of the garland with raffia.
