A new fence and gate accent the landscape makeover that Jason Cameron and the Desperate Landscapes team fashioned for a beach cottage. Below, tips on how to build the gate:
These tips will make gate building a little easier: Build a gate frame one-half inch smaller than the space you want to fill. Install a "Z" brace from the bottom of the hinge side running up to the latch side to provide extra support. Jason made arrow cuts (figure A) on each end of his lumber and fit it neatly into the corners of his frame. (Or, you can cut a 45-degree angle on both ends of the lumber and fit the brace that way as well.) Secure the brace with wood glue and wood screws. Install hinges. Position gate on fence post. Mark holes for hardware. Drill pilot holes. Hang gate (figure B).
