    Figure A

John Denver said it. So did Guy Clark: There's only two things that money can't buy; that's true love and home-grown tomatoes. Here's an idea to help you get good results in at least one of those endeavors.

    • To get juicy, delicious tomatoes, try using a red plastic "mulch" (figure A).

    • By wrapping the red plastic around the bases of your tomato plants, the soil temperature will increase. Any plastic mulch would accomplish this, but the red color makes this one special.

    • The reflection of the red onto the plants will help produce better shoots and, ultimately, better tomatoes.

    • Experiment with your set-up to make improvements on the reflection onto the plants. The end result could be tomatoes that are up to 20 percent larger.

    • Your climate and soil, of course, will also affect the yield of your tomato plants.
