The fire pit is a winning feature of the cabin exterior and was custom-built with help from Roger Cook of This Old House. The cobblestone-paver patio that surrounds it is the perfect spot for a few Adirondack chairs and gatherings around a fire on cool evenings. The fire pit's round shape was chosen by the online voters, a selection that pleases Roger since, although tougher to construct than a standard square or rectangular pit, it blends better with the organic, curvilinear forms of the surrounding landscape. The chairs used in this area are the voter-selected Adirondack chairs which many regard as the ultimate outdoor chair for sitting, relaxing and unwinding at the end of a day. For the "outdoor green feature," the voters chose eco-friendly, solar-powered path lights from Plow and Hearth. The stone patio hardscaping that surrounds the pit was also chosen by the voters and installed by DIY's resident stone gurus, Dean Marsico and Derek Stearns, hosts of DIY's Rock Solid. The final touch in the fire pit area is a pair of wooden stools, constructed literally on the spot by DIY's Matt Blashaw using cross sections of natural logs as the seats. Matt, host of DIY's Deconstruction, also fashioned a handmade wooden mantel, crafted from a single split, rough-hewn log, for the interior fireplace. View a slide show of this area.
