After looking over the materials in the ceiling kit, host Paul Ryan begins measuring out the perimeter. Using the laser level, he measures down from the ceiling and marks studs to add the 1x birch supports for the custom wood ceiling.

    Setting Up Perimeter

    1. Determine dimensions of room and which way ceiling joists run.

    2. Determine how far down from ceiling you want the grid to come down. For this project that is 4-1/4" from the ceiling.

    3. Set a reference line using a 360 degree laser level and adjust the laser to the proper height from the ceiling (figure A).

    4. The laser level can wobble up and down with people walking around the room. So mark the laser line every few feet.

    5. Mark the studs all around the room. 1x pine will be installed all around the perimeter of the room so the grid can attach to it.

    6. Take a 1x piece of pine frame and mark it on the center of the stud (figure B).

    7. Using a compound miter saw, cut the pine frame to size (figure C).

    8. Hold the pine frame just above the reference line, and fasten to the studs with an impulse nailer (figure D).

    9. Keep working around the perimeter of the room.
