This beautiful porcelain tile is seven times stronger than stone and will provide an easy-care floor for many years.

A new porcelain-tile floor provides a beautiful, durable and easy-to-clean surface in a busy kitchen. Here's how to install one.

    1. Snap a chalk line diagonally from 3 feet from the edge of the cement board and from the wall. The line provides your starting point.

    2. Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer's instructions, but use a latex additive instead of water. The result will be greater flexibility and adhesion.

    3. Cover any seams in the cement board with mesh tape.

    4. Apply mortar with a 3/4x3/4 U-notch trowel. Only spread as much mortar as you can work with in 10-15 minutes.

    5. Place the first tile by lining up its edge with the chalk line and its tip at the edge of the cement board. (Note: It's not necessary to tile the floor in areas that will be covered by cabinetry.)

    6. Place the remaining tile, using spacers to keep the lines even. Use a tile saw to cut tiles as necessary to fit the edges of the floor.
