The integrated approach is "simply a smart way to design, engineer and build a home," Dickens said. "Take in all the pieces in mind and put them together so they're going to work with much higher performance than homes today."

Dickens breaks down his company's philosophy concerning integrated construction:

First take a look at the foundation. Whether you use block or not, you must waterproof well -- and insulate well (figure A). No matter what insulation you use, make sure the builder tightens each nook and cranny.

    • Expanding insulation foam is vital for sealing the home properly.

    • High-performance, energy-efficient windows are a key.

    • Use of engineered trusses that allow not only structure but the services (plumbing, air ducts, etc.).

    • Use good old-fashioned caulk and seal every space possible to create a tight shell.

In the final Web Extra segment you'll find out how to make your home a well-oiled machine!
