| Pipes and Plumbing: Installing the Gas Lines |
From "Home IQ" episode DHIQ-110 |
When roughing in the plumbing, the plumber has responsibilities that go beyond the water. The Obergs will heat their home and cook their food with natural gas. The gas company, like the water company, will run gas to the curb and the plumber will bring it into the house. Viewers hear from site supervisor, Greg Allen, who talks about the gas line and on the inside, the plumbers run the black pipe that will carry the natural gas throughout the house.

The gas line that serves the house is yellow plastic tubing (figure A) that the gas flows through. Steel gas lines were prevalent in the past, but after a certain amount of time the lines had to be replaced due to rusting. With the plastic tubing rust is not an issue and since they've been utilized everything has worked well.Along side the gas line is a tracer wire (seen in figure A with the tubing) so if there is a leak of if any kind of excavation is being done on the property, the gas company can apply an electrical charge and use a meter (figure B) to find the leak. On the inside of the home, black steel piping (figure C) is used for the gas line, which is run by the plumbers exactly like the drains and vents earlier. Each piece of piping is cut to fit right on the site. A pasty material called "pipe dope" helps seal the joints and prevent leaks. With the rough-in and installation complete, hopefully you've seen how important it is to make decisions "early" so the plumber will know what has to go where. In the next episode of DIY's Home IQ you'll see what it takes to power a house as we tackle the electrical system.
