Here are a few tool tips for working on a deck:

    • If your boards are all twisted, a great way to get them to lineup is to use a board bender (figure A), which works by placing the mechanism on the board and crank it over until the board lines up, then drive the screw in.

    • When applying deck boards you may want to hide the fasteners. A great way is to use an EbTy (figure B) fastener. Here's how it works: lay the boards on the deck joist and mark a line indicating the location of the joists. Mark each joists and use a biscuit cutter to cut a slot in both sides of all the deck boards, making a cut at each joist. Slide the EbTy into the biscuit cutout and screw it into place with a deck screw. Then slide the next board into place.

    • Another way to hide those fasteners is to use a Deckmaster (figure C). Lay the perforated strap along the joists and attach with screws. Attach a strip to each joist in the same way, and then lay the deck board across the joists. Working from below put a screw through the strip to hold the board.
