Panning for gold is more about a love of nature and the development of patience than about achieving wealth.

Clara Lincoln purchased the Shenandoah Ranch because of her love of wide-open spaces and the beauty of nature. Although she once considered the ranch's gold mine to be a liability, she learned about prospecting through books and from other prospectors and now considers it to be her hobby.

The Mesa Grande Mine operated throughout the late 1800s but was shut down in the 1920s after a fatal accident occurred on the permises. Once the most popular mine in the area, it now has enough ore for Lincoln's "panning." (Panning is the process of swirling water in a ridged pan to capture gold. Interested hobbyists can find the pans at hobby, jewelry or sporting goods stores.)

Lincoln learns more about prospecting from members of the Gold Prospectors Association.
