Windows open and close differently, depending on the operating type. Following is a list of common types of windows:

• Casement windows are hinged at the sides.

• Awning windows are hinged at the top and open outward.

• Hopper windows are hinged at the bottom and open inward.

• Slider. Both sashes slide horizontally in a double-sliding window. Only one sash slides in a single-sliding window.

• Single and Double Hung In double-hung units, both sashes slide vertically. Only the bottom sash slides upward in a single-hung window.

• Fixed Windows do not open. They are for decoration only.

Roofs need to be tough. They're responsible for enduring the elements year after year in order to keep the outside from coming into your house. Your builder should implement a thorough water management strategy for the roof to prevent water from entering the home at gaps in corners, under shingles, or around windows, and drain it away from the home.

Three basic types of roofing are used on pitched roofs, and below are the features for each:

• Shingles -- The shingles are installed in sheets, with tabs cut out along the bottom. The tabs are exposed to the weather, and provide the recognizable shingle pattern. Shingles are used in all U.S. regions.

• Metal -- In production building, metal roofs typically accent bay windows, dormers, and other small areas of the roof. The metal panels can be painted or left unpainted.

• Tiles -- Roofing tiles are one of three types:
  1. Flat Tiles
     
  2. Tiles with a medium-sized profile and
     
  3. Barrel Tiles.

  The tiles are installed individually. Tiles are used mostly in southern and western regions.
