    Figure F

Artist and author Susan Driggers of Plaid Enterprises dresses up wooden birdhouses with brightly colored paint and explains easy techniques for painting flowers.

    Materials:

    Sponge brushes
    Wooden birdhouse from Walnut Hollow
    Acrylic enamel paint
    Paintbrushes--flat, round and liner brush
    Pencil with eraser

    1. Using a sponge brush, paint the roof of the birdhouse. Susan used red (figure A).

    2. Paint the inside of the birdhouse purple. Paint the outside with ivory paint.

    3. Here's an easy way to paint flowers: Dip the eraser end of a pencil in paint, and press dots onto the birdhouse in a small circle. Choose bright colors such as purple and red, and add a yellow dot in the center (figure B).

    4. To paint leaves, using green paint, press a round brush onto the birdhouse surface and lift (figure C).

    5. Using green paint and a liner brush, add vines to connect the leaves and flowers (figure D).

    Variations

Paint stars and stripes with red, white and blue paint to make an all-American birdhouse (figure E).

Stencil ivy vines on a white birdhouse.

Color a pear-shaped birdhouse bright yellow (figure F).
