Q: Can you give me some ideas and recipes for serving punch at my next party? A: (Jeanne Benedict, DIY entertaining expert) It's not a party unless there's punch! Here are three separate ideas for crowd-pleasing punches -- and display ideas -- that you might try. - Champagne Punch. This refreshing punch is a hit at occasions where a formal touch is called for. Consider serving champagne punch in a silver punch bowl, dressed up with a strand of costume pearls or other jewelry that will highlight the fancy bowl. If you don't own one, you can rent punch bowls like this from rental centers.
Pour the champagne into the bowl (figure A), and add Chambord (a rasberry flavored liqueur) to taste (figure B). For an alcohol-free version, substitute mineral water and rasberry syrup. For a garnish, create a gelatin ring with fresh-fruit and mint leaves (figure C), and float it in your punch.
- Mulled Cider. For a cool-weather gathering, create this seasonal favorite. Use a gallon of apple cider, and add cut fresh-cut apples and pears. Next, add whole cinnamon sticks and 1/4 cup of minced crystallized ginger. Warm and serve it from a stock-pot on your stove.
- Summer Punch. For a refreshing warm-weather beverage, allow your guests to make their own flavored lemonades. For flavorings, you'll first need to make snow-cone syrup by heating a cup of water and 2 cups of sugar to a boil over low heat. Once the sugar has all dissolved, stir in powdered drink mix in a flavor of your choice. You may want to make up several batches in different flavors.
Use a funnel to pour your flavorings into clear-glass decorative bottles (figure D) topped with pour-spouts. Your guests then select a flavor to create their own lemonade drinks (figure E).
