If you're ever removing a lightbulb, and the base breaks off in the socket (figure A), don't worry. It's easy to remove.

First, turn off the power to the light at the breaker panel. Then firmly jam a potato into the socket, and twist out the broken base. Be sure to wear gloves and safety glasses.

To prevent bulbs from breaking, try smearing petroleum jelly around the threads before inserting a fresh bulb.

To replace bulbs in high areas, use a bulb changer (figure B), which has a telescoping rod and grasping attachment to help you remove and install bulbs.

When choosing lightbulbs, you have several options. Instead of a traditional incandescent bulb, consider a halogen light, which provides more light and lasts longer. Halogen lights are more expensive, but they can save money over time.

Another money-saving choice is the fluorescent bulb, which uses much less electricity than a standard incandescent bulb. In addition to traditional fluorescent tubes, screw-in bulbs (figure C) are now available.

    Next: Install a Dimmer Switch.
