If you want to light an area across a driveway or sidewalk, hire a contractor to run a power supply underneath the concrete. To highlight a tree or other large object, use spotlights (figure A). Other options include step lights, which help light steps or stairways; minilights (figure B), which are useful on decks and around docks; and decorative path lights (figure C, D, E), which help light the way around garden paths. When choosing a light, select one that will withstand weathering. Before you install additional lights onto your system, add the wattage of all the lights to make sure you don't overload the transformer. Keep the lights within 100' of the transformer to avoid dimming.
