Artist Marsh Scott elevates table linens to dramatic artistic statements in this demonstration. Materials: Cloth place mats, runners, napkins or tablecloths
Wide, flat ribbon
Fabric paint or acrylic paint and textile medium
Foam or utility brushes
Flexible printing plates
Mounting block
Scissors
Fine-tip marker
Scrap paper
Foam plates
Pencil
- Cut flexible printing plate with scissors and mount on block of laminated covered wood or other solid surface. Peel and mount.
- Draw design on printing plate surface while pressing down (figure A).
- Place items for printing on a hard surface covered with plastic or protective paper.
- Cut foam with scissors and use pencil to draw design into foam's surface.
- Mix colors (or mix acrylic with textile medium if not using textile paint), and brush an even layer of paint onto printing plate.
- Test on a piece of paper (figure B).
- Re-ink plate and press evenly on surface.
- Begin building design, allowing any overlapping layers to dry before the addition of new color.
- Allow design to dry thoroughly and use heat (following product directions) to set -- usually by putting in the dryer for 5 minutes or ironing wrong side out.
Tips: - Avoid laundering printed table linens for at least 5 days to allow design to set completely.
- Wash tools and printing plates with warm soapy water (an old toothbrush can be used to clean printing plates). Blot dry and allow to dry completely before putting away.
