Create easy, casual table linens by cutting fabric and fraying the edges to create a fringe. Cindy Piccoli, host of HGTV's Decorating With Style, demonstrates no-sew and easy-sew techniques for creating fringed napkins, place mats, tablecloths and table runners that coordinate with the room decor.

Choose a loosely woven medium-weight fabric for the fringe treatment. Burlap makes a good table- topper because it's inexpensive and easy to fringe and comes in a variety of colors. Measure the area to be covered, and cut fabric to size accordingly. Make sure to include the fringe length in your measurement.

Fringe the edge of the fabric by inserting a long needle under the first thread at the corner of the fabric (figure A) and pulling off the thread (figure B). Continue to remove threads all around the fabric square until the fringe is the desired length.

Prevent the fringe from raveling by zigzag stitching by machine along the fringed edge or hand-stitching the edge with colorful yarn. For a festive look, sew a zigzag stitch, then tie the fringe in evenly spaced knots (figure C).
