Parrots and related birds are among the most beautiful birds in the world. They're also highly intelligent. If you're thinking about getting a parrot as a pet, here are a few things to consider. - Even if you live to a ripe old age, a parrot may outlive you. Some parrot species can live 75 years or longer, so a parrot as a pet is not a short-term commitment.
- Parrots are by no means quiet pets. They can be very noisy -- sometimes at inconvenient times like when you're on the phone, entertaining guests or even in the middle of the night.
- If out of their cage and left unattended, parrots may be destructive. With their sharp and powerful beaks, they can easily damage furniture.
- If you decide a parrot is the right pet for you, be sure to get one only from a licensed breeder. Taking parrots from the wild damages the (possibly delicate or threatened) wild population. Wild-caught birds may also be unhealthy and there's a greater possibility they may have disease.
- Research your area to make sure that there is an avian veterinarian in your area. Parrots are delicate tropical birds and require some specialized care. Not all vets treat birds, so it's important to make sure that there's one in your area who does in case your bird should ever become sick or injured.
