    Materials:

Wireless buzzer system (available at any electronics store)
    Training tool

    1. Place the buzzer in the training tool and allow the cat to take food from the spoon. As she does so, continually sound the buzzer so she associates it with receiving food.

    2. After your cat is accustomed to this step, start holding the spoon in front of her, giving her a bite and buzzing each time she does so . Keep moving the tool slightly ahead of her so that she follows: she will take a step, get a bite of food and hear the buzzer (figure A). This establishes a pattern in her brain.

    3. Now it's time to start jumping through hoops! Cover a large embroidery hoop with ribbon and hold it front of her, only a couple of inches above the table. Hold the tool on the other side of the hoop and, as she steps through, buzz and reward her (figure B). After she becomes adept at stepping through the hoop, gradually raise it until she learns to jump through it.

Silverman also shares her secret for spending quality time with her cats: after she gets home in the evening, she sets aside a block of time for each cat to receive individual training and attention. That way, no one feels slighted!
