One of the most popular pets of recent years is the Vietnamese potbellied pig, a miniature breed common throughout the Orient. Characteristics Clean, intelligent animals with a friendly personality, the tiny porkers make excellent indoor companion, even in a home that already has pets of a more conventional type. They make very individual pets, as each has its own look and personality (figure A). Pigs are intelligent enough to be easily trained to use a dog door and a litter box. They love attention, and when a potbellied pig is happy, he will bristle in a display that looks fierce but is anything but (figure B). Care Especially if you have other pets, you should get your pig when he's a baby (figure C), about 7 weeks old, so that he can adjust to the other animals in the home. As soon as you get him, take him to the veterinarian to be dewormed, if necessary, and inoculated. Pigs of both sexes should be neutered at a young age; with males this is especially important, as sexually mature boars grow long tusks that can pose a safety threat to other members of the family.
