Paper artist Emmy Good uses a papier-mache technique to create an imaginative bowl. Plastic mixing bowl Handmade paper Vano liquid starch Shallow container for starch Embellishments, flowers or dried material - Estimate the amount of paper needed. (For a large container, one square yard of paper is necessary. For small containers, about an 18" square is needed.) Tear all paper into 2" x 4" pieces.
- Pour starch into container and completely cover a piece of paper by dipping it into the starch. Wipe off excess starch with fingers (figure A), and lay piece on the bottom or inside wall of the bowl (figure B). Avoid using too much starch -- use a paper towel to soak up excess that pools on the bowl's surface. In addition, don't use too little, or the bowl will simply fall apart.
- Repeat technique until inner surface of bowl is covered as desired. A rough edge can be created at the top of the bowl by extending the pieces past bowl's edge 1/4" to 1/2". For a neater edge, scissors can be used to trim the edge.
- Always use dried materials as decorations. To attach the decorative materials, create a bridge. Place dried item inside the wet container extending past the top. Use a piece of the same paper used for the bowl to secure the item in place. Press bridge into the sides of the bowl. Repeat technique until all elements have been bridged. Allow to dry in a warm place overnight (or longer, depending on the paper's thickness).
- After container has dried, loosen edges and remove from the plastic bowl. Decorate the outside if desired, using the bridging technique. Once exterior of bowl has dried, paint if desired.
